I DIALED THE VIDEO store as soon I got home. It wasn't open yet, but I knew the staff was there and preparing for customers. Fortunately, after I let it ring for a while, I heard Mustang's voice.
"Yeah," he said, obviously in a huff, before following protocol and saying the store's name and asking how he could help.
"Mustang, it's me. Kirk Dugan."
His tone changed. "Dude! Good to hear from you!"
"I'm glad you answered just now. If it was anyone else I would have hung up."
We exchanged home phone numbers, which is something we hadn't done before, and then I told him the reason for my call.
"Trust me," Mustang said. "I have some ideas already. All it takes is finding the right personâthe right guyâand that might change your life."
"It needs some changing," I acknowledged.
"Let me see what I can whip up for you."
A knock on my front door interrupted our call. Mustang and I said quick goodbyes and I hung the phone back up on the wall. Not expecting a visitor, I peered out of the blinds through my living room window and saw Andrej, the former video store assistant manager, standing on my stoop. He had on sunglasses, tennis shoes, and a tank top, and the top half of his hairy legs were covered by old fashioned coach shorts. Andrej looked pretty good, but I didn't answer the door.
He remained on the stoop, staring down at his feet, nervously tugging on the back of his mullet.
I wasn't in the mood to play. Just imagining the verbal jarring that would likely ensue exhausted me. I rotated the wand, which closed the blinds, then retreated to my bedroom and undressed for a shower.
My better self reemerged a few minutes later when I was drying off. I reprimanded myself for being unnecessarily cruel. Not answering the door was one thing, but shutting the blinds on Andrej was going too far. I wrapped the towel around my waist, returned to my living room, and reopened the blinds. Of course, Andrej was long gone.
I pondered the idea of a crooked path again. The one lined with a series of poor decisions. This actionâreflecting my lack of decency and respectâhad counted. I felt sorry for Andrej and pissed off at myself. I resolved to be better. I read the inspirational messages taped to the door of my refrigerator and aimed to forgive myself, yet again.
